How to customize the error (404) page

Users may encounter an Error page when trying to access private, restricted, or non-existent URLs within your school.

In this article, you will learn how to customize the Error page to match your school’s branding and user experience.

Why the 404 error page appears

If pages appear in your school’s authoring interface but are not accessible to users, visitors may be redirected to a 404 Error page. The most common reasons include:

  • The page is set to draft or has an expiration date.
  • The page is the Affiliate Self-Registration page (available on the Learning Center plan or higher), but the related affiliate setting is disabled.
  • The page belongs to an inactive Site Flavor, and the corresponding page does not exist in the active one.
  • The page is linked to a course, learning program, or subscription that is set as draft, private, or archived
  • An authoring URL was shared instead of the public page URL (URLs containing /author/ are accessible only to admins).
  • All course sections are drip-fed, leaving no accessible section for users to enter the course. In this case, it is recommended to keep at least the first section unlocked

Customize 404 error page

1. Click on Website Design  Edit Website.

2. Search for the Error page to edit from the Page Manager.

3. Customize the page appearance, and add or edit text and buttons to match your needs, improve the user experience, and guide users to the appropriate destination.

4. Click Save to save changes on the page.

It's suggested to keep only one section on the Error page, as its purpose is not promotional but to help users navigate back to the main pages of your school.
