How to Use AI to Grade Open Text Assignments in Exams

This guide will walk you through how to set up the AI Reviewed Text Assignment and configure an AI-powered assessment.


Why Use AI to Grade Open-Text Assignments? 


The AI Reviewed Text Assignment is a type of question, available under the AI Enhanced Questions section when adding questions to an exam. It helps you: 

  • Save time by removing the need for manual review.
  • Provide fast, consistent feedback across all learners.
  • Scale your grading process effortlessly for large classes.
  • Enhance learning outcomes with targeted, personalized feedback.

Setting up an AI-Reviewed Text Assignment Question


To utilize AI to grade open-text responses:


  1. Create your exam. C
  2. Click the "+" (Add Question) button.
  3. Choose the AI Enhanced Questions.
  4. Click AI Reviewed Text Assignment.
  5. Enter your open-ended question in the text field.
  6. Adjust formatting and placeholder text if needed.

Configure Settings


Click on Edit question to see three main configuration tabs on the right:


AI Review Text Assignment (General Settings)


  • Set the question to Required or Optional.
  • Hide or show to the user.
  • Set the  Minimum and Maximum characters.
  • Adjust the Textarea width and height.

Score


1. Set the Points for the question. 

2. Fill in the AI scoring criteria.


While setting up the Score section of the AI Reviewed Text Assignment, you can define the focus of the scoring criteria manually and select from the following options to guide the AI's evaluation:


  • Evaluate the response for accuracy and completeness.
    → Ensures the learner's answer correctly addresses all parts of the question with complete and relevant information.

  • Evaluate the quality of examples and evidence provided in the response
    → Focuses on how well the learner supports their answer with appropriate examples, data, or justification.

  • Assess the reasoning and argumentation of the response
    → Examines the logical flow and strength of the learner’s argument or explanation.


Feedback


When you activate AI Automatic Feedback, you can personalize how the system responds to learners by configuring several options, like the focus of the feedback criteria and the:


Feedback Type

Choose what kind of feedback the AI should provide:

  • Generic – Standard, neutral feedback.
  • Strengths & Weaknesses – Balanced view of what was done well and what could be improved.
  • Positive Reinforcement – Focuses only on encouraging comments.
  • Rubric – Feedback follows a rubric-style structure, tied to evaluation criteria.

Feedback Length

Control how much detail is included in the AI’s feedback:

  • Concise – A short, to-the-point comment.
  • Normal – A moderate-length response.
  • Extensive – In-depth feedback with detailed explanation.


Strictness of the Feedback

Set the tone of critique:

  • Supportive – Gentle and encouraging feedback.
  • Balanced – Neutral tone with both praise and critique.
  • Rigorous – More demanding and critical evaluation style.


Tone of Voice

Customize how the feedback “feels” to the learner. Choose from a wide range of tones:

  • Funny
  • Formal
  • Informal
  • Humorous
  • Serious
  • Optimistic
  • Motivational
  • Inspirational
  • Persuasive
  • Assertive
  • Respectful
  • Inclusive
  • Accessible
  • Friendly
  • Professional


These tone settings allow you to align the feedback with the style of your course and the maturity of your audience.


You can also activate the AI Feedback Assistant, allowing learners to ask follow-up questions about their feedback and set the number of times they can interact with it. 


To enable the AI Feedback Assistant, you first need to activate it by going to SettingsFeedback AI Feedback Assistant.


Once you configure everything, click Save to add the AI-Reviewed Text Assignment to your exam.


Tips for Best Results

  • Write clear, focused prompts.
  • Define detailed assessment criteria.
  • Enable the AI Feedback Assistant for deeper learner engagement.
  • Test the AI-reviewed question thoroughly in Preview mode to ensure the configuration meets your expectations.

User Experience


Learners will respond to this question type as they would with any exam question. After submitting, their score will show as pending. To view the feedback, they can refresh the page or revisit the exam later, just like with other assessments.


If the AI Feedback Assistant is enabled, learners can also interact with the AI to get deeper insights into their score and evaluation.
