How to Accept iDEAL Payments through Stripe

A popular payment method in the Netherlands

iDEAL is a Netherlands-based payment method that allows customers to complete transactions online using their bank credentials. All major Dutch banks are members of Currence, the scheme that operates iDEAL, making it the most popular online payment method in the Netherlands with a share of online transactions close to 55%.


The way iDEAL works is to redirect customers to their online banking environment to authenticate a payment using a second factor of authentication and there is an immediate notification about the success or failure of a payment. This results in a low risk of fraud or unrecognized payments. Furthermore, iDEAL payments can be refunded up to 180 days after the original payment.


Note: iDEAL only works with Euro Currency and with one-off payments, therefore can not be used for Payment Plans (installments) and/or Subscriptions. 

Set up your system to accept iDeal payments through Stripe

1. Enable iDEAL as a payment method in your Stripe account. Navigate to Settings → Payment methods and enable iDEAL.

Make sure to read the Terms of Use and the iDEAL Addendum and click on Activate on the modal. iDEAL is not enabled yet from Stripe and it is in pending mode.

A final email will be sent to you by stripe that informs you about the status of your activation. If successful the status will be changed from Pending to Live and now you would be able to use iDEAL on your school.

2. Make sure that your school’s currency is set to Euro. You can change that by going to Settings → Financial → Currency.

3. Click on Settings → Financial  → Payment Gateway and enable iDEAL.

Your Payment pages will include iDEAL as a payment method.
