How to Create your App’s Screenshots

In this article, you will find guidelines on the sizes of the screenshots provided for the App Store and Play Store

Apple

Every screenshot that you provide needs to have a purpose and ultimately boast the best features of your app.

A well-designed set of iOS app screenshots are:

  • appealing and eye-catching
  • clean and easy to read
  • straight to the point
  • on-brand

In addition to being nicely designed, your iOS app screenshots have to follow Apple's guidelines and size requirements.

You have to use images and videos that are taken directly within your app. That means you are not allowed to use images or videos that show, for example, someone holding an iPhone. Apple actually gives you 10 slots for screenshots. We highly advise that you use all 10 slots. Every additional screenshot is an added opportunity to advertise why people should download your app.

The next important aspect of designing iOS screenshots is adhering to the Apple device sizes. The tables below outline which sizes are required and the corresponding pixels for portrait and landscape orientation.

Google

Google Play is more lenient when it comes to app screenshots than Apple is. In contrast to Apple products, the size requirements for app screenshots are minimized; instead, Google will adapt your screenshots to match the device size of the mobile user.

You are allowed to add up to 8 screenshots. To publish your Store Listing, you must provide a minimum of 2 screenshots.

  • JPEG or 24-bit PNG (no alpha)
  • Minimum dimension: 320px
  • Maximum dimension: 3840px
  • The maximum dimension of your screenshot can't be more than twice as long as the minimum dimension.

Google Play Feature Graphic Size

In addition to screenshots, to get featured in Google Play, you'll also need to provide a promo video and a feature graphic.

Your feature graphic for Google Play has to follow these size requirements:

  • JPEG or 24-bit PNG (no alpha)
  • Dimensions: 1024px by 500px

Useful App Screenshot tools

Screenshots are one of the key driving factors in attracting potential users to achieve higher downloads. The primary function of the app screenshot is to provide relevant information to the user and give them a sense of what they can expect from your app.

AppScreens

AppScreens is an app screenshot tool to design high-quality screenshots for Android and iOS. It supports all iPhone, iPad, Android, and Android Tablet sizes and simplifies the process of designing screenshots for multiple Android and iOS devices simultaneously from a single design.

Appure

Appure is a tool for localized screenshots. It offers a dedicated workflow to localize your app in 28 different languages supported by the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. It lets you design screenshots with plenty of features such as background, images, frames, shadows, positions, rotations, fonts, and more. It also lets you create random layouts and new designs with every single click.

Previewed

Previewed is a mockup generator that can be used to create app mockups, 3D device renderings & animations. You can create panorama screenshots for a variety of iOS and Android devices in just a few clicks. Additionally, there is an app store preview video maker which can help you dress up your app’s video preview, to make it stand out in the app stores.

Snapshot by Fastlane

Snapshot by Fastlane is a screenshot generator that makes the process of taking screenshots easier and faster. Namely, instead of taking screenshots manually, this tool helps you to do it automatically and for different versions of your app. To be more precise, Snapshot can save hours of work by simply returning a collection of screenshots of a certain feature/element in multiple languages for multiple devices. This also makes it easier to localize your app. It also fixes the issue of blurry texts, wrong frame size, and scaling, which can occur quite often.

Best Practices for Designing App Screenshots

1. Show Off What Your App Can Do

Highlight the most engaging screens and most appealing features to capture your audience’s attention.

2. Emphasize Your App’s Main Features

Focus on emphasizing your app’s main features. These are the ones that are most frequently used and also most often searched for by users.

3. Build a Storyline with Your App Screenshots

The most successful use of rich imagery is to visually tell a story. This means you should try to reach your visitors with powerful screenshots so that you can engage them to download your app. The story that you should tell is, how your app is going to solve the user’s problem.

We will automatically generate screenshots for the stores showcasing the main screens (those that reside in your bottom tab bar) of your app. It is required that screenshots reflect the true state of the app so make sure that you preview your app screens using our preview tool before submitting it for review. You can submit new screenshots at any given point by sending them to our support team.
