Want to upload videos to LearnWorlds but not sure which file formats work best? This guide will help you choose the right settings so your videos look great and play smoothly.
Supported Video Formats
LearnWorlds supports a wide range of video formats and codecs. Here are the basics:
File Type: This is the type of video file you upload (e.g., .mp4, .mov).
Codec: This is the technology that prepares your video for online streaming.
Recommended File Types
MP4 (recommended)
MOV
AVI
MKV
FLV
WMV
If you’re not familiar with these, choose MP4 for the best results.
Recommended Codecs
We recommend:
H.264 (best choice)
Apple ProRes 422 (also supported)
Video Resolution & Quality Tips
Here’s what we suggest for smooth playback:
Video Type | Resolution | RF Setting (Handbrake) |
---|---|---|
Standard Definition (SD) | 480p / 576p | RF 18–22 |
High Definition (HD) | 720p | RF 19–23 |
Full HD | 1080p | RF 20–24 |
Ultra HD (4K) | 2160p | RF 22–28 |
The auto-choose video resolution depends on various factors like:
1. The speed of your internet connection.
2. Video player/screen size: Higher-quality videos generally play better on larger screens.
3. Quality of the originally uploaded video: If the video was recorded in standard definition, it won’t be available in high definition.
What is RF?
RF (Rate Factor) is a setting in tools like Handbrake that balances video quality and file size. A higher RF number produces higher-quality video, and a lower RF number produces lower-quality video.
Should You Upload 4K?
We support 4K videos, but keep in mind:
High-resolution videos may load slowly for users with slower internet.
For most courses, 720p HD provides excellent quality and faster playback.
Aspect Ratio
We recommend a 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen) for the best viewing experience.
File Size & Compression
Large video files can cause slow upload times and buffering. To keep things smooth:
Recommended max file size: 1 GB.
Even HD videos can be compressed without losing noticeable quality.
How to Compress Videos
We recommend using Handbrake, a free tool that makes it easy to compress videos.
