How to Create a Reflection Journal Activity

The Reflection Journal feature in LearnWorlds enhances the learning experience by encouraging students to think more deeply about their past responses. It allows learners to revisit their previous assessment answers, helping them evaluate their understanding and reflect on their thought processes.

Each time a student submits an assessment, their answers are automatically saved and can later be accessed through the Reflection Journal or Widget, giving learners the opportunity to continuously learn from their own progress.

Examples of How Reflection Journals Can Be Used:

  • Post-Quiz Review: Learners revisit incorrect answers and reflect on their reasoning.
  • Weekly Reflections: Students review key questions each week and journal about their learning.
  • Skill Development: Learners track how their problem-solving approach improves over time.
  • Project-Based Learning: Students reflect on assessments tied to project milestones.
  • Soft Skills Training: In courses like leadership, students evaluate past decisions and consider alternatives.

In this article, we will learn how to create a Reflection Journal using a template or a Previous Response (Reflection) Widget and customize the layout and appearance of your reflection unit.

Create a Reflection Journal Activity

Option 1: Use the Ready-Made Reflection Journal Template

This option is ideal if you're starting a new self-assessment and already know you want to include a reflection question.

1. Select the course where you'd like to add the reflection journal.

2. Click on Add Activity under an existing course section.

3. Choose Self-Assessment and select the Reflection Journal template.

4. Name your activity and click Save or Save and Edit if you'd like to begin editing right away.

1. The widget will be hidden automatically if the user hasn't provided an answer to the selected assessment question.

2. It's not feasible to add a reflection widget within the same assessment.

Option 2: Use the Previous Response (Reflection) Widget

This is a flexible option when you already have an existing self-assessment and want to allow learners to reflect on specific past answers.

1. Select the course and navigate to the existing self-assessment activity.
2. Add your question to the assessment.
3. Click the plus (+) icon below the question description to insert the Previous Response (Reflection) Widget.

Set up the Reflection Widget

Once added, you’ll need to configure the widget settings. Click on the reflection widget:

1. Under Select previous response → Assessment, choose the past assessment where the question you want students to reflect on is located.

2. Under Select question, pick the specific question from that assessment.

3. Under What to display, choose one of the following options:

  • Both the assessment question and the user's answer
  • Only the assessment question
  • Only the user's answer

4. Customize the widget’s appearance:

    • Appearance: Choose a layout style
    • Type: Select text type (e.g., heading, paragraph, quote, overline)
    • Size: Pick a text size (e.g., tiny, small, normal, large, very large, huge)
    • Alignment: Set text alignment (left, center, or right)

Example - User Experience
